Full-time Instructor of Sport and Leisure Management: University of Memphis


The Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management at The University of Memphis is seeking a full-time Instructor of Sport and Leisure Management. The anticipated date of employment is August 2017.

QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of an earned Master’s Degree with an emphasis in Sport Management, or a related discipline is required. A doctorate, professional industry experience, and/or prior college-level teaching experience are desired. In addition, it is desired that candidates have expertise in two or more of the following content areas in sport: sales, facility and event management, social media and sport communication, and/or community sport. A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and community service is expected. The ideal candidate will demonstrate innovative teaching using both traditional and online formats, as well as a strong focus on experiential learning and comfort in establishing and supervising meaningful sport management internships, as well as developing community partnerships.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Contribute to classroom delivery in the undergraduate program in Sport and Leisure Management. A teaching load of 12-15 credit hours per semester is expected. Coordination of the Sport and Leisure Management internship program is expected. Mentoring of undergraduate students is also expected, as is service to the school, university, and profession. It is anticipated that the candidate will actively pursue community partnerships on behalf of The University of Memphis’ Bureau of Sport Commerce and Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management.

SETTING: The University of Memphis is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as one of two public research universities, and the only community engaged public university in Tennessee. It has six colleges and six professional schools serving a diverse population of approximately 21,000 students, 4,000 of whom are enrolled in graduate programs. The Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management has approximately 500 undergraduate and graduate students.

SALARY & BEGINNING DATE: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. The instructor position is a nine-month appointment (12 pay periods) with options for paid summer teaching. The University offers an excellent benefits package, and the state of Tennessee currently has no state income tax. The anticipated date of employment is August 14, 2017. Final approval of this position is pending available funding.
